Lakers With Artest Could be Great or Terrible

The Los Angeles Lakers are only a few months past this most recent NBA championship. Of Course they took the title for a fourth time in the last decade and did so by way of a Hall of Fame coach and arguably the best 2-guard in the league.

However the Lakers had other key players that more than contributed to their 2008-2009 title. Pao Gasol did major work for them in the post while Lamar Odom provided the versatility that all teams desire from a power-forward. Lets not forget Trevor Ariza who was an amazing defensive stopper for L.A. and who came up with a few big time steals in the playoffs to seal victories for the team.ron-artest-lead

So the question begs if the Lakers had such a great chemistry on their team and perfect fit players at every position, why did they let Ariza go and bring in Ron Artest? Of course Artest may be an upgrade on the court but Ariza for this specific team is more valuable. You don’t have to worry about Trevor causing problems off the court, in the locker room, or with the media. With Artest you definitely do. Ariza also made all the plays you would have wanted him to make without taking away from Kobe’s brilliance.

Here is why Artest is probably the worst off-season acquisition the Lakers could have made. Bringing in a fellow all-star who desires and expects attention and setting him next to Kobe is simply a bad idea. It was different bringing in Gasol who is humble and isn’t a media whore. But Artest is going to want interviews and the spot light and photographs and I bet he will do what is necessary to make sure he gets all of that.

Championship caliber teams are always about chemistry and not simply about talent. Remember when the Lakers had Shaq, Kobe, Malone, and Payton all on the same starting roster. That did not work out for them. Surprising as it is you need a balance of players that compliment each other and that are not just individually talented.  The lakers had that last year and by getting rid of Ariza for Artest they may have lost it all. It will be exciting to see.

St. John’s Grabs Peter Robert Casey as Twitter Blogger

You all know Peter Robert Casey, he was featured here in an exclusive interview a few months back for his impressive work with The Entertainers Basketball Classic a.k.a the EBC, but what you may not know quite yet is that he recently signed an agreement with St. John’s University to act as a micro-blogger covering men’s basketball games for the upcoming 2009-2010 season. Casey will be given a court side seat to each contest and will use his twitter account, @Peter_R-Casey, to broadcast in real time how the Red Storm are doing on the court. Casey has been given the green light to use his basketball I.Q. and personal brand to dissect the play of the St. John’s basketball team in order tolife_peterrobertcasey_200 reach basketball fans that are online via Twitter when the Red Storm are playing. He will be the first Twitter-blogger to earn a seat on press row.

To put in perspective how many followers and fans Casey has on Twitter, he is among the top ten most followed individuals in the basketball community which includes coaches and players of all calibers. In other words only 9 potential NBA players have a bigger following base than Casey. As a non-celebrity that is amazing. Be sure to check out more details of this story that even ESPN has covered.

Are we following each other on Twitter yet? @DinoGomez

Guy dunks basketball with his legs!

It seems like every week there is another new video that surfaces with amazing footage of a basketball play. This video is no exception. My cousin sent me the link and it is perhaps the craziest of trick shots that I’ve ever seen. Already people are claiming its fake. I would like to think its real. Everything isn’t a set up and doesn’t have some hidden underlying purpose. The lebron dunk tape incident was not some Nike stunt to increase Lebron’s hype. He has plenty of it and was seen at 3 media televised events in the two weeks in which the tape was hidden. With that said heres the video. What do you think about it? Great NBA Twitter Accounts

Since everybody and their mom is on Twitter, I thought that I would go ahead and list some of those NBA players who have also joined the bandwagon. Now not all of the following players actually tweet every message themselves… some players have ghost tweeters or people that tweet messages for them. However all the following accounts are real and do represent the players themselves. The following list is composed of those accounts which I enjoy following and those which tweet often. A more comprehensive list can be found at Blogs with Balls.nba-twit1

Handle of the Week- Peter Robert Casey

It was easy for us to decide who was most deserving of The Handle of the Week award this Friday, Peter Robert Casey. (Handle of the Week award is described at the top of this page in more detail… look above)  Peter is a one of a kind basketball intellectual as well as a networking king. He is all over the internet and has 50k plus followers on Twitter. He also does a great job with his blog, PeterRobertCasey.com, where he recently interviewed Claude Johnson, the founder and president of Black Fives, Inc. Make sure you check out how that Q. and A. went with Mr. Johnson over there and while your at it read about New Heights.

Our Handle of the Week award goes to… Peter Robert Casey.

Summer League

Since I can’t personally fly down to Orlando and report on the pro summer league, I’ll do the next best thing; send you to someone who can.  That someone happens to be David Thorpe, a respected basketball coach and ESPN contributor.  He’s been tweeting his observations almost non-stop over the last few days.  Obviously the tweets, being limited by length, are not what you’d call comprehensive.  However it is nice to get a feel for what’s going on.

Here is a link to an insidehoops.com page with the complete summer league rosters.  Yes, if you’re wondering, the Sixers and Nets have a combined team.  If one your favorite players has flown under Mr. Thorpe’s radar don’t be alarmed.  Although it’s nice to be commended, sometimes it’s the egregious errors that earn notoriety.  Without further adieu:

Tweets day 1

Tweets day 2

Two things I saw caught my eye: 1) Coby Karl, Coach Karl’s son, is playing well.  The guy survived cancer and is now doing his best to stick with an NBA club.  2)  Psycho-T Hansbrough’s first NBA shot was blocked!  I’m sick of hearing about what a great player he is, this is the big-leagues; good luck getting by in the NBA playing the part of the goggled, gratuitously sweaty but hustling old guy at open gym. (That’s my role!)

Last few notes:

Former Cavs assistant John Kuester is the new Pistons head coach.

It’s reported that Mike Bibby has agreed to a new contract to remain with the Atlanta Hawks.

The Power of Facebook and Twitter

Facebook has indeed been around for a good while and Twitter has been blowing up as of the past year, but tkevin-love copy(1)hese two social media platforms can really do work for you if you so choose. About a month ago I was logged on to my Twitter account, Twitter.com/DinoGomez, and I was watching Around the Horn on ESPN. The discussion on the show turned towards Kevin Love’s Twitter page and his tweets regarding the NBA finals. The panel was arguing over whether Love’s tweets were insightful and they were discussing the whole idea of pro athletes on Twitter. After seeing this I decided to send a tweet directed at Kevin Love but that everybody could see on Twitter which said, “Hey the crew on Around the Horn was just discussing you and your tweets about the NBA finals. Good stuff.”

About twenty minutes later or so Kevin Love sent me a tweet back that was directed at Dino Gomez, one that everybody could see. ” What did they say about me.”

I didn’t get that tweet until a day or two later since I had logged off at the time, but it was great to see that Kevin Love responded directly to me . Of course I then recited to him what the panel on the show was saying about his Twitter account and the discussion between us ended. Now you may be thinking that because our conversation was so quick and consise that it was un-important. However that is why Twitter is so powerful, you can gain information so quickly and easily. I know Kevin Love went online to see exaclty what the panel on the show was saying about him as soon as I tweeted him because in a later tweet he referenced that he was a discusssion point on the show. In other words I was his first outlet to that information. The point I’m getting at is Facebook and Twitter will allow you to communicate with those individuals that you wouldn’t be able to otherwise. Therefore it is important that you use these platforms advantageously to speak with others and stay current on sporting news if you so choose.
